COVID-19 Update for September 23 2020 – 1:40pm

Unveiling the second plank in Ontario’s plan to manage COVID-19 this fall, Premier Doug Ford announced the expansion of COVID-19 testing to pharmacies, to help take pressure off of local assessment centres.

Testing in Pharmacies

Starting this Friday, September 25, up to 60 pharmacies in Ontario will provide free, publicly funded COVID-19 testing. Testing will be by appointment only, and is for individuals who are not showing symptoms of COVID-19. Everyone will be screened before entering the pharmacy.

“It’s easy to get a flu shot and it needs to be just as easy to get a COVID-19 test,” Ford said.

Testing will be available at Shoppers Drug Mart, Rexall and independent pharmacies.

Expanded Saliva Testing

Premier Ford also said that the Ontario government is working with partners to expand saliva testing for COVID-19. Women’s College, Mount Sinai and University Health Network-Toronto Western Hospital assessment centres will be offering saliva testing this week. The Premier said that they are continuing to work with Health Canada to expand these types of less invasive testing at assessment centres.
