COVID-19 Update for May 8, 2020 – 2:00pm
Re-opening Details “Soon”
Premier Ford’s daily briefing did not include any new announcements. The Premier remarked on the devastating job numbers – Ontario lost nearly 700,000 more jobs in April, according to Statistics Canada – and reiterated what is being done to re-open the province’s economy.
To that end, Finance Minister Rod Phillips promised details on the re-opening framework, but with no specific timeline, saying only that the government will “soon” be in a position to announce, “significant steps.”
Sports Training Facilities Re-Open
Earlier today, Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries Lisa MacLeod announced that Ontario is easing restrictions on professional sports training facilities. Starting today, many of the facilities will be permitted to re-open, provided their respective sports leagues have established health and safety protocols in response to COVID-19. MacLeod described this as a critical sector for Ontario, as sport represents more than $12.6 billion to the province’s economy and thousands of jobs across the province.
