COVID-19 Update for May 20, 2020 – 2:00pm

Premier Doug Ford Update

A day after Ontario began the first phase of its gradual reopening plan, Premier Doug Ford urged members of the public and business operators to continue following safety precautions to avoid a resurgence of COVID-19.

The Premier said health officials will closely monitor new infection rates and won’t hesitate to reinstitute stricter lockdown measures to prevent the virus from spreading further.

“We’re watching the trends like a hawk right now,” he said. “If we see things going in the wrong direction, we’ll be fully prepared … to roll things back, if necessary.”

The Premier reiterated a recommendation by the Chief Medical Officer for people to wear non-surgical masks or face coverings in public when it may not be possible to stay at least two metres apart.

Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, said the Ministry of Health has released specific recommendations on how to choose, wear and care for appropriate face coverings used in public where physical distancing is not possible, along with additional safety measures for provincial transit agencies.

Minister of Transportation Caroline Mulroney said the province is working with transit agencies to develop a clear set of guidelines to help reduce the risks of COVID-19 as more people begin using public transportation. Anyone taking public transit is recommended to wear a face covering, except for those under the age of two, people with trouble breathing and those who cannot remove a mask or face covering without assistance.

“Making sure that public services, like transit, are available is essential for successfully opening the province and restarting our economy,” she said.
