COVID-19 Update for May 14, 2020 – 12:45pm
Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a series of targeted supports for fish harvesters, farmers and Canadian veterans. He also highlighted plans to gradually reopen national parks and heritage sites across the country.
COVID-19 Support for Canadian Veterans
The PM announced a new support initiative for Canadian veterans including the “Chronic Pain Centre of Excellence” at McMaster University. The centre will focus on national research, training and education for veterans. “To all those who have served Canada – thank you. The entire country supports you and we are grateful to you,” Trudeau said.
COVID-19 Support for Fish Harvesters
The federal government will invest $470 million to support fish harvesters including creating a fish harvester benefit. The new benefit will cover 75 per cent of losses up to $10,000, if their income decreases at least 25 per cent this season. Fish harvesting business owners will also be offered non-repayable grants of up to $10,000 including extension on Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy, which will now be extended beyond June.

COVID-19 Support for Farmers and Agriculture Sector
The PM outlined a $100-million Agriculture and Food Business Solutions Fund for farm business in Canada, encouraging all Canadians to buy made-in-Canada products. “Not only will it taste great, but it will help people who put food on our plates,” Trudeau said.

COVID-19 Support for Indigenous Communities
The government is also partnering up with Indigenous and northern communities by providing $2.3 million for food and supplies.
Re-opening National Parks and Heritage Sites
Some national parks will partially reopen at the beginning of June allowing people to access trails and other green spaces where physical distancing can be practiced.
Additionally, new regulations on boating will be imposed as of June 1, restricting pleasure craft operation in Canada’s Arctic coastal waters and coastal areas of northern Quebec and Labrador.
