COVID-19 Update for June 26, 2020 – 1:45pm

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s daily briefing highlighted today’s opening of applications for the expanded Canadian Emergency Business Account, and he spoke about the Red Cross replacing the military in long-term care homes.

This afternoon, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced additional funding for seniors, and was non-committal when asked about the province moving to Stage 3 of its re-opening plan.

CEBA

Prime Minister Trudeau noted that applications for the expanded Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA) are now available through Canada’s large banks. Eligibility was broadened last month to include sole proprietors, farmers and businesses who use contractors or pay themselves through dividends.

Armed Forces in Long-Term Care Homes

Trudeau announced that members of the Red Cross will replace the Canadian Armed Forces still supporting long-term care homes in Quebec. $100 million previously given to the Red Cross will allow 900 workers to support long-term care homes until September 15, deploying 150 people on July 6 and the remaining 750 on July 29. While members of the CAF are still in one long-term care home in Ontario, Trudeau expects their departure in the coming days.

Funding for Seniors

Premier Ford announced an additional $4 million for organizations providing community support for seniors, to combat social isolation, improve seniors’ safety and wellbeing, improve financial security and make communities “age friendly.”

Full details for the additional funding can be found here.

Stage 3 Re-opening

Asked by reporters about when Ontario might move into Stage 3 of the re-opening, Ford noted that the issue was discussed at today’s cabinet meeting. He said no exact time-frame has been determined, but that the government will take a “cautious approach” and that a regional roll-out is likely.
