COVID-19 Update for June 25, 2020 – 11:20am

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s update today focused on student summer jobs and internships.

Post-Secondary Students

Prime Minister Trudeau announced that the federal government is launching the Canada Student Service Grant to give post-secondary students or recent grads who volunteer in their communities grants of between $1,000 and $5,000. The amount of the grant will be based on the number of hours worked between June 18 and September 18. More information can be found on the government site through the I Want to Help portal.

The government will also invest $40 million to create 5,000 Mitacs internships at the post-secondary level. The new funding will allow the national research organization to extend programs for undergrads and in professional programs such as law, business or medicine.

In addition to these measures, Trudeau announced investments in Canada Summer Jobs to add 10,000 placements for students between 15 and 30 years old, and 20,000 placements for university-level students through the Student Work Placement Program.

Research

In April, the federal government launched a competition to fund research to stop and contain the spread of COVID-19. The prime minister announced 139 research teams will be supported across the country, representing an investment of almost $110 million.
