COVID-19 Update for June 22, 2020 – All Province
Across the provinces
Here are the latest steps being taken by provinces and territories in response to COVID-19, with the focus now squarely on safe economic re-opening. To date, there have been over 101,000 confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic.
British Columbia – The BC Legislature returns today after a prolonged COVID-19 absence. It certainly looks different: only a fraction of Members are actually in the Legislative Assembly, while others are attending virtually. The government still needs to debate and pass the pre-pandemic budget introduced back in February. The summer session is scheduled to sit until mid-August.
Alberta – Earlier this month, Alberta became the first province to mass distribute face masks as part of its pandemic response. The first phase of the province’s non-medical mask distribution has ended, with 14 million masks provided at fast-food drive-thru locations. The second phase is set for July, when 20 million more masks are set to be handed out. Albertans can receive a package by calling 211.
Saskatchewan – Saskatchewan begins the first part of its Phase 4 re-opening today, allowing for the resumption of child and youth day camps, outdoor pools and spray parks, and outdoor sports and activities. The next part of Phase 4 has yet to be announced, but will include libraries, museums, movie theatres, indoor pools and rinks, and bingo halls.
Manitoba – The government today announced the extension of two COVID-19 tenancy protection measures until September 30: the current freeze on rent increases and the postponement of non-urgent eviction hearings.
Ontario – Premier Doug Ford today announced that effective Wednesday, Toronto and Peel regions will be moving into Stage 2 of the province’s re-opening. The Windsor-Essex region remains in Stage 1 amidst ongoing concerns about relatively high positive tests among temporary agriculture workers.
Québec – Premier François Legault today announced a major cabinet shuffle that sees Danielle McCann replaced as Health Minister, moving to the Higher Education portfolio. Treasury Board President Christian Dubé is taking over the Health file. Today’s announcement from the province, including a list of all changes, can be found here.
New Brunswick – The province remains in the Yellow stage of its re-opening with the exception of the Campbellton area, which will stay in the Orange stage until Friday, unless the outbreak worsens. This coming Friday, all remaining businesses in the province can re-open with appropriate distancing and sanitizing.
Nova Scotia – There are no new updates to report for Nova Scotia since our last update.
Prince Edward Island – There are no new updates to report for Nova Scotia since our last update.
Newfoundland and Labrador – Newfoundland and Labrador is moving to the next step of its re-opening plan, Alert Level 2, this coming Thursday.
Yukon – There are no new updates to report for Yukon since our last update.
Northwest Territories – There are no new updates to report for Northwest Territories since our last update.
Nunavut – The government is allowing medical travel to Churchill, Manitoba, which has not had a confirmed COVID-19 case since the start of the pandemic.
