COVID-19 Update for June 17, 2020 – 12:00pm

This morning, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that his government will release an economic and fiscal update on July 8. He also announced $500 million in research grants, assistance for the fisheries sector and a gradual re-opening of Parks Canada.

Fiscal Snapshot

Trudeau set July 8 for an economic update in the House of Commons. He explained that this won’t be a full fiscal report or budget, but rather a “snapshot or portrait” of what the COVID-19 crisis means for the Canadian economy, how Canada’s response compares to other countries and expectations for the months ahead.

Research Grants

The PM announced nearly $500 million through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s annual Discovery grants program. This funding will support research projects in natural sciences and engineering disciplines.

Assistance for Fish and Seafood Sector

Two additional programs to help fish and seafood producers in Canada will come on line in the coming week. Today, the Canadian Fish and Seafood Opportunities Fund will be available to help producers access new markets, reach new customers and maintain an international foothold. Applications for the Canadian Seafood Stabilization Fund will open on Monday.

Parks Canada

Starting on Monday, Parks Canada will begin to re-open some camping sites across the country. As these sites reopen, the Prime Minister reminded Canadians to continue following public health recommendations.
