COVID-19 Update for June 15, 2020 – 12:00pm

This morning, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau provided an update to address the Canada Emergency Benefit Account (CEBA), the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB), the Food Surplus Purchasing Program, as well as a new initiative on artificial intelligence.

CEBA

Prime Minister Trudeau reminded Canadians that the government has recently expanded the Canada Emergency Benefit Account (CEBA) to more small businesses, including farmers. Applications will open on Friday at edc.ca.

CERB

The federal government is working on a solution to extend the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) for people who cannot return to work yet. More details will be released later this week.

Food Surplus Purchasing Program

The federal government is opening applications for the Food Surplus Purchasing Program. The government will be buying surplus food from farmers such as potatoes, poultry, seafood and more to redistribute to people who are facing food insecurity. People across the country will benefit, including in rural communities.

Artificial Intelligence

Prime Minster Trudeau also announced that Canada helped launch a global partnership on artificial intelligence as one of the 13 founding countries.

The federal government is also working with Government of Quebec on a Centre of Expertise in Montréal as one of two global hubs.
