COVID-19 Update for June 12, 2020 – 12:15pm

In his daily address, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced an extension to the Canadian Armed Forces deployment in long-term care homes, new protocols for air travel and $14 billion in funding to the provinces and territories for a safe restart agreement.

Military Presence in Long-Term Care Homes

The Prime Minister announced that orders deploying members of the military into long-term care homes in Ontario and Québec will be extended until June 26. The orders had been set to expire today. The federal government is currently in conversation with Québec to provide further support until September 15, as requested by the province, which may call upon members of the Red Cross.

Air Travel Protocols

Passengers travelling by air to, from and within Canada will now be subject to mandatory temperature checks. Anyone with a fever will be prohibited from flying. These checks will be rolled out in phases, beginning with those travelling to Canada. It is also now mandatory that travellers and airline staff wear masks on flights.

Provincial Funding

Trudeau announced $14 billion in funding to the provinces and territories to develop a safe restart agreement for the next six months. This funding aims to ensure that Canadians don’t have to roll back measures to restart the economy.
