COVID-19 Update for July 7, 2020 – 2:45pm
In his daily COVID-19 briefing, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced legislation to lift the Provincial Declaration of Emergency while maintaining existing orders to keep Ontarians safe.
Lifting the Declaration of Emergency
The provincial government has put forward legislation that, if passed, would lift the Provincial Declaration of Emergency while maintaining existing orders put into place to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. This legislation will not allow the provincial government to add any new emergency orders, only to remove or amend them.
Solicitor General Sylvia Jones explained that the new legislation would allow Ontario to ease restrictions where appropriate and maintain certain tools to address the continued threat of COVID-19, including restrictions on labour redeployment or workplace and management rules, gatherings and events, closure or regulation of businesses and compliance with public health advice. Jones added that the provincial government “will not hesitate to explore, and exhaust, all options necessary to protect Ontarians”, including issuing a new Declaration of Emergency.
