COVID-19 Update for July 16, 2020 – 3:15pm
In an unexpected appearance this afternoon, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the federal government and the provinces have reached an agreement on the Safe Restart Plan, now an investment of over $19 billion.
Safe Restart Plan
First announced in early June, the Premiers and the Prime Minister have finally come to an agreement on the funding the federal government proposed giving to the provinces and territories to help them reopen safely. Today, the Prime Minister announced over $19 billion for the provinces and territories “to protect the health of Canadians, help people get back to work safely, and prepare for a potential second wave.”
This funding comes with seven outlined “priority areas,” including increased testing and contact tracing, securing more personal protective equipment (PPE) and more support for the most vulnerable populations including seniors. Trudeau also cited safe childcare options and paid sick leaves as top priorities and noted that the agreement includes increased support for municipalities, specifically highlighting transit.
As part of the announcement, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland announced additional support for those working in long-term care facilities, those who need home and palliative care, and additional spaces in childcare facilities. She also announced paid sick leave so that all workers can take up to ten days of sick leave if needed.
Trudeau also announced that the closure of the Canada-US border would be extended by another month, until August 21.
