COVID-19 Update for July 13, 2020 – 12:15pm
Trudeau Update – July 13, 2020
In his regular COVID-19 update today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the government will announce this week an extension of the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy to December.
He also said that Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland has been in contact with the provinces and territories to discuss their reopening plans. He confirmed that he had a call with US President Donald Trump to talk about the new NAFTA, tariffs on aluminum, systemic racism and trade with China, as well as the two detained Canadians.
Canada Student Service Grant Program
Addressing the controversy on the WE charity and the Canada Student Service Grant Program, Trudeau said, “I made a mistake in not recusing myself immediately given our family history with the organization.” He acknowledged that young people will now have to wait longer to get involved with the program because of his error.
When questioned about whether he was aware that his family members had been paid by the WE charity, he said that he knew that they had worked with WE but did not know the details and he “should have dug deeper.”
We hope you are finding these COVID-19 updates useful. In addition to trying to keep on top of the fast-changing situation, Enterprise is also working to support local charities during these challenging times. If you are able, your contributions to this effort would be deeply appreciated.
