COVID-19 Update for April 20, 2020 – All Province Update
Across the Provinces
As Canada passes 35,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases, here is a summary of the latest measures taken by the provinces and territories:
British Columbia – The BC government is taking action on price gouging and reselling of medical supplies. Under the province’s Emergency Program Act, police and enforcement officers now have the ability to issue $2,000 tickets. BC Premier John Horgan is expected to announce new COVID-19 supports for Indigenous communities later today.
Alberta – In partnership with the federal government, the Government of Alberta has implemented a new protocol on responding to confirmed COVID-19 cases at food processing plants.
Saskatchewan – The Government of Saskatchewan has issued an update on the revenue impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Depending on the length of restrictions, the potential revenue decline for the province ranges from $1.3 billion to $3.3 billion.
Manitoba – The Government of Manitoba has implemented new public health orders requiring anyone entering the province, even if it was just from another province, to self-isolate for 14 days. With a handful of exceptions, the province is also prohibiting travel to northern Manitoba. The restrictions will be in effect until May 1.
Ontario – The Government of Ontario released updated COVID-19 modelling today showing some positive signs, but emergency measures need to stay in place according to the Chief Medical Officer of Health. The Government of Ontario is also putting $20 million forward for the Ontario COVID-19 Rapid Research Fund, with the goal of advancing medical research to combat the pandemic.
Québec – The Government of Québec has outlined the terms of deployment for doctors coming to assist seniors in living facilities. Recently, doctors in the province were asked to offer their services and more than 3,000 responded.
New Brunswick – With no new cases yesterday and a growing number of recoveries, the Government of New Brunswick is beginning to talk about eventually reopening the economy, albeit gradually. According to a statement from Premier Blaine Higgs, “People will return to work and businesses will open, but this will not happen overnight. It is important that we go at the appropriate pace.”
Nova Scotia – The Government of Nova Scotia has confirmed community spread of COVID-19 and has removed travel as a requirement for testing for the virus.
Prince Edward Island – There are no new measures from PEI since our last update when the province declared a state of emergency and renewed the public health emergency.
Newfoundland and Labrador – No new measures from Newfoundland and Labrador since our last update.
Yukon – Yukon’s government has enacted new border control measures under the Civil Emergency Measures Act, ensuring that officers at the border have the legal authority to deny entry to anyone non-essential. The Yukon government has also begun to publish information about COVID-19 tests daily on Yukon.ca. The territory is also expanding the use of rapid test kits.
Northwest Territories – A new NWT COVID-19 support line has launched. Residents of the Northwest Territories can dial 811 for COVID-19 information and services.
Nunavut – The Nunavut Department of Health has released an update on its Isolation Sites. As of last Friday, 357 guests are in Isolation Sites, where the Department of Health is providing food, cable, internet, cleaning supplies, and other needed items.
