COVID-19 Update for August 7 2020 – 11:00am

In his daily update, Premier Doug Ford announced funding for child care, and commented on U.S. President Donald Trump’s threatened aluminum tariffs.

Child Care Funding

Allocating funding from the joint federal-provincial Safe Restart Agreement, Ford announced $234.6 million for child care and early years facilities. The money is aimed at covering increased cleaning costs as well as health and safety requirements such as personal protective equipment needed to re-open licensed child care and early years programs.

Aluminum Tariffs

Punctuating his remarks with phrases like “back stab” and “slap in the face,” Premier Ford made it clear he’s not happy with the 10 per cent tariff President Trump said would be imposed on Canadian aluminum, noting he has heard the U.S. is also considering tariffs on steel.

“I just have to say how disappointed I am in President Trump right now,” Ford fumed. “In times like this, who tries to go after their closest ally?” Vowing that “we will come back swinging like they’ve never seen before,” he said he has encouraged Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland to impose retaliatory tariffs on U.S. imports.
