COVID-19 Update for April 9, 2020 – 2:00pm
Premier Doug Ford addressed the job loss data that was released this morning, calling the 400,000 jobs lost in Ontario a “punch in the gut.” As challenging as these times are, Ford warned that things could get worse before they get better and that the government will leave no stone unturned in bringing Ontario back to its former economic might.
Ontario Jobs and Recovery Committee
While emphasizing that the health crisis is the top priority, the Premier – alongside Finance Minister Rod Phillips and Treasury Board President Peter Bethenfalvy – said that the government is strategizing to address the economic crisis as well. To that end, he announced the creation of the Ontario Jobs and Recovery Committee. The committee will focus on getting businesses up and running and people back to work after the COVID-19 pandemic is over. This includes determining how government can continue to help key stakeholders provide sector-specific support and the eventual strategic lifting of restrictions.
The government’s news release, found here, provides more details, including a list of committee members.
