COVID-19 Update for April 27, 2020 – 12:05pm
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s daily briefing did not include any new announcements. It was primarily an update on previously announced measures, including the launch of the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWG), which will cover up to 75 per cent of an employee’s pay to enable businesses to keep them on the payroll.
CEWG Now Live
Trudeau reported that the CEWG portal is now live and accepting applications. Companies who apply today can expect to get their first payment by May 7. He noted that since the portal went live at 6:00 this morning, nearly 10,000 businesses have already applied. You can access the application portal here.
Parliament Sitting this Week
The PM confirmed that Parliament will have its first virtual sitting tomorrow and an in-person sitting on Wednesday. Members of Parliament will be meeting to legislate the aid package for students that was announced last week.
Economic Re-Opening
As provinces and territories continue to unveil plans to gradually re-open their respective economies, Trudeau reiterated that his government is working collaboratively with them on “shared guidelines…for clear, coordinated efforts.” He stressed that they will not be federal guidelines (i.e., administered and enforced by Ottawa), but a framework for provinces and territories as they determine their own re-opening strategies.
