COVID-19 Update for June 23, 2020 – 1:50pm

June 23, 2020

While Prime Minister Justin Trudeau did not give an update this morning, Ontario Premier Doug Ford was joined this afternoon by Education Minister Stephen Lecce as he unveiled a new elementary curriculum for mathematics and implored farmers to increase worker testing for COVID-19.

Math Curriculum

Touting a “return to basics,” Premier Ford announced a new math curriculum for students in Grades 1 to 8. Minister Lecce said the curriculum will focus on fundamental math facts and incorporate coding and financial literacy. Children will learn about budgeting and financial planning using current and practical examples “so students can connect math to everyday life.” Because it is introducing a new curriculum, the province will cancel EQAO testing in Grades 3 and 6 for the 2020-2021 school year.

The full release for the new math curriculum can be found here.

COVID-19 Testing for Farm Workers

Premier Ford began his press conference with a direct appeal to Ontario’s farmers, urging them to make sure that testing is available for all workers. He also asked workers with concerns about COVID-19 to get tested. Ford emphasized that workers who test positive for the virus and need to self-isolate for two weeks will be eligible for WSIB (Workplace Safety and Insurance Board benefits) and be protected during their time off. He also said more details on a plan to protect workers, farmers and “get the Windsor region on track to join the rest of the province in Stage 2” will be announced Wednesday.
