COVID-19 Update for July 3, 2020 – 12:00pm

July 3, 2020

Speaking from a food bank in Gatineau, Quebec, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s briefing today teed up next week’s economic update and cabinet retreat, as well as announcing British Columbia infrastructure projects and investments in skilled job training.

Economic Update / Cabinet Retreat

Next week will be significant for the Trudeau government, as the PM hosts a two-day virtual cabinet retreat, focusing on how to keep Canadians safe, bolster the economy and deal with potential future waves of COVID-19. Systemic racism and discrimination will also be discussed.

On Wednesday, Finance Minister Bill Morneau will release a fiscal and economic “snapshot,” reporting on where the economy currently stands, how the Canadian response compares to other countries and what to expect in the approaching months.

Infrastructure Investments

Prime Minister Trudeau announced that 92 infrastructure projects in BC – totalling about $150 million – will proceed under the Investing in Canada plan.

Union Training and Innovation Funding

As part of annual funding, Trudeau announced that the federal government will invest $40 million over three years in the Union Training and Innovation Program. This investment will provide support and training to Canadians to help them find “good, well-paying jobs.”
