Manitoba’s New Cabinet

With less than nine months until Manitobans hit the ballot box for the next provincial election, Premier Heather Stefanson announced a major shake up to her Cabinet.

This shuffle follows the announcement of 12 Progressive Conservative MLAs who have indicated they will not seek re-election in October’s
election. This list includes Deputy Premier and Minister of Economic Development, Investment and Trade Cliff Cullen; Finance Minister Cameron Friesen (who has also resigned as MLA to seek the federal Conservative nomination in Portage-Lisgar); Minister of Municipal Relations Eileen Clarke; Minister of Labour, Consumer Protection and Government Services Reg Helwer; and Speaker Myrna Driedger. While not all retiring ministers were removed from Cabinet, today’s shuffle was indicative of the Tories’ need to focus on winning seats in suburban Winnipeg that are expected to be hotly contested in this fall’s election.
