Peter Downs

Consultant

Peter Downs brings 20 years of journalism experience to Enterprise Canada, including the last 12 in Niagara at the St. Catharines Standard.

Beginning his career as a reporter and then editor for the Lincoln Post Express, Peter eventually moved to the Haliburton County Echo, the Peterborough Examiner and then the St. Catharines Standard, where he has covered all major beats.

Peter spent most of his time at the Standard covering the health beat, where he earned the respect and co-operation of health officials across the region and at Queen’s Park for his understanding and insight into complex and often contentious issues. Peter brings an extensive knowledge of municipal, transit and other topics. He also played a role covering every major election over the past 12 years, where he reported from the campaign trail, tracked candidates, blogged and used social media to engage voters on election night.

A graduate of York University in Toronto with a degree in English literature, Peter’s writing has earned him several national and provincial Community Newspaper Association awards for his work on a diverse range of topics, including health, education and the environment. He also earned an Ontario Newspaper Association nomination in news feature writing for a four-part series on children's mental health issues in Niagara.
